Sehr zum Missfallen der obersten und erfolgreichsten Schülerin des Hauses, Hatsumomo, die in der hübschen Chiyo ihre schärfste Konkurrentin sieht und ihr das Leben zur Hölle macht. Aus Chiyo wird schließlich Sayuri, die fortan den Reichen dient. So eröffnet sich dem Mädchen vom Lande eine Welt voller Privilegien, aber auch voller Neid und Intrigen.
