Due to a possible cholera epidemic onboard, passengers on a ship are forced to disembark at Pago Pago, a small village on a Pacific island where it incessantly rains. Among the stranded passengers are Sadie Thompson, a prostitute, and Alfred Davidson, a fanatic missionary who will try to redeem her.
Zia, distraught over breaking up with his girlfriend, decides to end it all. Unfortunately, he discovers that there is no real ending, only a run-down afterlife that is strikingly similar to his old one, just a bit worse. Discovering that his ex-girlfriend has also "offed" herself, he sets out on a road trip to find her.

本片描寫了十九世紀末期，義大利北部貧窮困苦的農村中好幾戶農家生活的點滴，由很多個小故事組成。其中的一段敘述一位佃農的兒子去學校讀書，對當時這個地方的人而言，讀書是件很不容易的事情，家長不懂得受教育的意義與好處，不願意送孩子去讀書，神父多次勸告下家長方才這樣做的。這些家庭還需要在生活上加倍省吃儉用來供這些孩子們讀書。一個佃農的孩子在讀書回來時，鞋子壞了，父親就砍了一顆樹，連夜製成了一雙木鞋。地主知道了這事之後，就把這戶佃農趕了出去。影片講述了3個農夫同在一個東家幹活的故事，尤其要強調的是各個家庭成員與他們鄰居的關係。義大利導演艾瑪諾·歐密以其敏銳的能力把一些非專業演員安排在此片做主演，歷時12個月。這部影片就影像風格來說幾乎是一部紀錄片，不同的只是由演員來表演，是生活流電影的名作。重現19世紀義大利佃農生活，優美動人。此片因其精彩的表演和感人的情節榮獲1978年戛納電影節最佳影片金棕櫚大獎、1979年愷撒電影節最佳外語片獎等十多項國際性電影大獎。

Goods are being imported from the West, and these include American music, films and fashion. Everybody but Egon owns a record player. Finding his path among his family members, hippie owners of music records, schoolmates, teachers, communists and dissidents. Egon gets his record player in the end.
