What happens when a person decides that life is merely a state of mind? If you're Betty, a small-town waitress and soap opera fan from Fair Oaks, Kansas, you refuse to believe that you can't be with the love of your life just because he doesn't really exist. The clinic doctors have more sinister reasons to test this device on Reiko, however, and secretly put her under hypnosis so that the ring is activated at any time she hears the sound of a bell. Can she escape the evil doctors’ experiment and, even if she does, who is that strange person, dressed all in black, following her around?

Her rapport with her fellow nurses is put to the test when she ignores warnings and becomes involved with the head surgeon, Dr. Muraoka, who turns out to have a sinister side including a penchant for non-consensual sex and inappropriate use of cooking ingredients.
