讲述1970年世界小姐选美比赛是全球亿万观众瞩目的国际盛事，一个新组成的女权组织认为选美是贬低女性，因此极力反对，更于比赛期间在众目睽睽下冲上舞台，扰乱和阻碍比赛进行。虽然她们立即就被逐离场，而比赛亦继续进行，但更触动观众神经的一幕却随即上演：当晚夺冠的佳丽竟然不是大热的瑞典小姐，而是来自西印度群岛岛国格林纳达的JenniferHosten，以黑马之姿成为史上首位获胜的黑人女性。就在短短一小时内，全球观众亲眼目睹父权主义被公然挑战，西方审美观亦被全然颠覆，一场选美翻起千重浪，亦为女权运动打下漂亮的一仗。

以1987年全斗焕独裁统治下发生的六月民主抗争运动为背景。1987年1月，一名参加学运的大学生在被警察拷问的过程中死亡，朴处长 (金允锡 饰) 下令将尸体火化以毁灭证据。另一边厢，当日值班的崔检察官(河正宇 饰) 拒绝执行任务，并要求解剖验尸，结果显示大学生被拷打致死。经调查后，记者尹尚三 (李熙俊 饰) 亦意外发现大学生的死因是窒息，事情因而在各大媒体上曝光。种种证据矛头均指向涉事的警察，官方却依然坚持他只是死于突发心脏病。当朴处长越想把真相隐瞒，事情就越一发不可收拾……

1999年春天，对生活绝望的中年男子金永浩（薛景求饰），落魄地参与了同学会，他神经质般哭叫，并在高架桥上面对迎面而来的火车嘶喊：我要回去！ 　　火车带着记忆倒走，三天前的金永浩已然崩溃，欲寻了断，但是被神秘人物叫去见一个人；再之后是1994年，他生活放荡，对妻子（金丽珍饰）冷若冰霜又出手大打；1987年身为警察的他，手段凶悍；1984年、1980年一直到1978年，直到第7个片段通过初恋情人（文素利饰）以及“薄荷糖”这一点题信物，影片才给出是什么碾压过主人公的生命，粉碎其美好的答案。

这是第二次世界大战之后，导演黑泽明的第一部电影．以战时曾经引起轩然大波的京都大学教授龙川事件，鸠山文化部大臣军阀主义的盛行，而将鼓吹自由主义的京都帝国大学教授龙川开除，当时遭到京都帝国大学上下一致的反对。此外并以卓鲁格国际间碟事件做为背景，描写女主角幸枝于战争中所遭遇的种种，进而批判战争以及当时盛行的法西斯主义。片中后段描写决定独立的幸枝所遭遇的苦难，她跟随野毛之后，初尝爱情的幸福滋味，但好景不长，野毛由于暗地从事反战运动而终生入狱，幸枝也因此每天被特务逼问受尽屈辱。而担任此案件的检察官竟是当年的同学系川。幸枝被释放之后，回到野毛所深爱的故乡，与野毛的双亲一起渡日。日本在战败后，民主主义盛行，八木原教授又回到学校中，幸枝则决定从事农村文化运动。片中的幸枝并非日本过去的传统女性，而是经过战争及战争后的混乱期，终于找到自我，忠于自已意志的新时代女性。

As Mexico prepares to host the 1968 Olympics, students and civilians are uniting on the streets to protest the authoritarian government. Tensions are running high and the eyes of the world are on Mexico and President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz. Ana Maria, a student photographer and daughter of a high-ranking official, finds herself embroiled in the movement and is swept off her feet by Félix, a working-class architecture student. This film remembers the events that led to one of the darkest chapters in Mexico’s recent history: the massacre at Tlatelolco, 10 days before the opening of the Olympic Games.

"A", a member of a student protest organization, becomes disenchanted by his group's inability to effect real change.
