Het honkbalteam The Cleveland Indians heeft in 34 jaar geen succes behaald. Voormalig nachtclubdanseres Rachel Phelps trouwt de eigenaar van het team. Hij overleeft de huwelijksreis niet, en zij erft het team van hem. Zij haat Cleveland, en wil graag een nieuw stadion betrekken in een warmer klimaat, zoals Miami, Florida. De enige manier waarop zij onder het contract met Cleveland uit kan komen, is wanneer het bezoekersaantal onder de 800.000 komt. Om dat te bereiken stelt ze het slechts denkbare team samen. Wanneer het team er achter komt wat de bedoeling van Rachel Phelps is, besluiten ze terug te vechten.
