Strhující filmová verze slavného muzikálu skladatele, dirigenta a klavíristy Leonarda Bernsteina vznikla v roce 1961, zatímco divadelní inscenace muzikálu měla premiéru už v roce 1957. Autoři scénáře čerpali svůj námět ze Shakespearova dramatu Romeo a Julie a vytvořili parafrázi na nejslavnější milostný příběh světa. Původní Montekové a Kapuleti zde byli nahrazeni bělošskými a portorikánskými partami, žijícími v západní části New Yorku poblíž Harlemu. Výjimečné filmové dílo získalo celkem 10 Oscarů.
