(بروس) هو مراسل قناة تلفزيونية، يتعرض لكثير من المتاعب نتيجة تجاوزه الخطوط الحمراء في تغطياته التلفزيونية، ولايحالفه التوفيق في حياته. وفي لحظة من لحظات اليأس يقوم بتوجيه كلام قاس للخالق، ويعلن كفره. وفي اليوم التالي يتلقى اتصالاً من شخص يخبره بأنه الخالق، وأنه سيعطيه الفرصة ليكون الخالق طيلة أسبوع، يتحكم في مصائر البشر، لكن لن يكون له دخل في الإرادة الحرة للإنسان، فيستغل الأمر في تصفية حساباته، لكنه يفشل في استعادة حب خطيبته.
تعود الأحداث إلى عام 1630 في نيو إنجلاند، فنتيجة لتهديده بالنفي من قِبَل الكنيسة، يترك مزارع إنجليزي المزرعة التي كان يستغلها وينتقل مع زوجته وأبنائه الخمسة إلى أرض نائية على حافة غابة مشؤومة تسكنها قوى شريرة غامضة. على الفور تحدث أشياء غريبة تدعو للفزع، فتصبح الحيوانات شريرة، تفسد المحاصيل الزراعية، يختفي أحد الأبناء ويتعرض آخر لمس من روح شريرة. مع تصاعد الشك والفزع، يتهم أفراد الأسرة الابنة المراهقة توماسين بالسحر، وتنفي الفتاة عنها بقوة كل هذه الاتهامات. لكن مع تزايد بشاعة الظروف المحيطة، يصبح إيمان، ولاء وحب كل أفراد الأسرة في اختبار بأساليب صادمة لا يمكن أن تزول من الذاكرة أبداً.

The day before their departure, storm weather is announced, the busses even ride early to keep ahead, but the wind makes a river rise too fast: the busses are caught, everybody must run on foot. As TV reporters see from their helicopter, the rising water is too fast for one bus after choosing the wrong way, children and staff must climb in trees but can't cling on very long.
