쿠바의 관타나모 기지에서 불법 총격 사건의 범인을 알려주겠다던 산티아고 사병이 다른 두 명의 해병에게 일명 코드 레드라는 금지된 특수 기합을 받다가 죽는 사건이 발생한다. 해군은 이 사건의 변호사로 능수능란하게 사건을 합의하는 것으로 유명한 캐피 중위(톰 크루즈)를 선임하지만 겔로웨이 소령(데미 무어)이 개입함에 따라 일은 복잡해진다. 조너선 중위(키퍼 서덜랜드)가 그 혹독한 기합을 명령했음을 알아낸 캐피와 겔로웨이 소령. 이들은 사건의 배후세력을 밝히기 위하여 기지 사령관 제셉 대령(잭 니콜슨)을 만나러 간다.

1942년, 인도네시아 자바 섬의 레바크 센바타 일본군 포로수용소. 영국 육군 중령으로 포로인 존 로렌스는, 급한 일이 있다며 이른 아침에 갑자기 자신을 깨운 하라 겐고 중사와 함께 어디론가 나간다. 나가보니 도열한 병사들 앞에는 웃통을 벗고 상처투성이로 묶여 있는 두 명의 남자가 쓰러져 있었다. 한 사람은 네덜란드군 포로 드 용이었고, 또 한 사람은 일본군의 조선인 군속 가네모토였다. 하라는 로렌스에게, 드 용이 바나나를 훔치다 걸려서 독방으로 갔으며, 가네모토가 몰래 드 용의 독방에 숨어들어 그를 범한 것이라고 이야기해주는데…

젊고 총명한 엔자인 윌리 키스(로버트 프란시스 분)는 제2차 세계대전 미국 해군함, 케인호에 배정을 받고 입대한다. 케인호에는 새로운 선장으로 필립 프란시스 퀵 선장(험프리 보가트 분)이 임명되고 케인호는 임무를 수행하기 위해 출항한다. 퀵선장은 예전의 선장과는 달리 케인호의 질서와 명령 체계를 새로 잡겠다는 굳은 의지를 보이며 강력한 통솔력으로 부대를 지휘한다. 그러나, 퀵 선장은 신속한 결단을 내려야 할 때나 위기에 처했을 때, 심한 정신 불안 증세를 보이고 심지어 별로 중요하지도 않은 일을 들추어 부하들을 추궁하는 등 정상인과는 다른 정신 이상증세를 보이기 시작한다. 이를 눈치 챈 부하들은 지휘권 문제를 놓고 의견 차이를 보인다. 그러던 어느날 폭풍우가 몰아치던 날 밤, 케인호를 지휘하던 퀵 선장은 심한 스트레스 증세와 함께 통솔력을 잃고 만다. 이를 보고 있던 스티브 매릭 중위(본 존슨 분)는 퀵 선장의 지휘권을 박탈하고 자신이 케인호를 지휘한다. 그날 밤의 사건을 계기로 '반란' 여부를 둘러싼 재판이 벌어진다. 키스를 비롯해서 스티브 매릭과 톤 키퍼 중위(프레드 맥머레이 분)는 퀵선장의 명령 불복종과 반란을 도모했다는 혐의로 군사 재판에 회부되고 군의관들의 진단 결과나 모든 사항이 그들에게 불리한 쪽으로 기우는 듯하다. 그러나 마지막으로 법정 증인으로 채택된 퀵 선장이 자신의 의견을 옹호하는 증언을 하는 과정에서 또다시 정신 이상 증세를 보임으로써 재판은 결국 스티브 매릭 중위를 비롯한 부하들의 승리로 끝나고 만다.

우주력 0079년, MS부대의 소위 시로 아마다는 쟈쿠와의 싸움 중에 MS가 파괴되어 폐우주선에 숨는다. 아마다는 그곳에서 지온의 파일럿 아이나를 만나게 된다. 부상을 입은 아이나를 치료하면서 시로와 아이나는 서로 호감을 갖게 된다. 적으로 만난 그들은 서로 헤어지게 되고 이후 아마다는 MS부대의 08소대를 맡게 된다. 아이나는 오빠 기니어스가 개발한 신병기를 테스트하던 중, 연방의 건담 부대와 마주하게 된다. 그 부대는 아마다의 08소대였다! 아마다와 아이나는 접전 끝에 산으로 떨어지고 재회하게 된다. 짧은 기간이지만 사랑을 나누는 둘. 이후 정보부 밀러 소령은 시로에게 아이나를 죽이지 않은 이유를 추궁하며 총살당할 것인지 기니어스 기지를 수색할 것인지 선택하라고 하는데.......

The story is set in the British province of New York during the French and Indian War, and concerns—in part—a Huron massacre (with passive French acquiescence) of between 500 to 1,500 Anglo-American troops, who had honorably surrendered at Fort William Henry, plus some women and servants; the kidnapping of two sisters, daughters of the British commander; and their rescue by the last Mohicans.

Major Charles Carrington (David Niven) is arrested for taking £125 from the base safe. He also faces two other charges that could finish his distinguished service career. He decides to act in his own defence at his court martial hearing, his argument being that he is owed a lot of money from the army for his various postings that have cost him out of his own pocket. This docudrama follows the court-martial of the title character, the man held responsible for the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War.
