Dva vojáci z americké základny Guantanamo Bay na Kubě jsou obviněni z vraždy svého kolegy. Případ se zdá nadmíru jasný. Vojenská prokuratura svěří obhajobu obou obviněných poručíku Kaffeemu, mladému ambicióznímu právníkovi, který proslul mimořádně rychlým mimosoudním vyřizováním svých případů. Kaffee chce svým klientům doporučit, aby se přiznali a vymoci jim co nejnižší trest. Kapitán Gallowayová, pověřená dohledem nad celým případem, je však jiného mínění. Domnívá se, že oba obvinění pouze vykonali rozkaz svého velícího důstojníka. Děj se odehrává v Japonském zajateckém táboře na ostrově Jáva v roce 1942. V lágru je jediný zajatec, který mluví Japonsky a to plukovník Lawrence. Ten je donucen sadistickým seržantem Harou zúčastnit se mučení a vynuceného harakiri jednoho z dozorců. Po intervenci u velitele tábora je poprava odložena. Ostatní japonští důstojníci se začínají na zajatcích mstít, protože se obávají ovlivňování velitele tábora plukovníkem Lawrencem.
