In een mystieke wereld leven verschillende stammen die één van de vier elementen beheersen: water, aarde, lucht en vuur. De enige persoon die alle vier elementen beheerst is de Avatar. Tijdens een aanval van de Vuurnatie verdwijnt de Avatar plotseling. 100 jaar later ontdekken twee kinderen (Katara en Sokka van de Waterstam) een jongen genaamd Aang die zit vastgevroren in een rots.
Ali is een zangeres met een grote stem uit een kleine stad die vlucht voor ontbering en een onzekere toekomst om haar dromen waar te maken in Los Angeles. Ze belandt in The Burlesque Lounge, een majestueus maar in verval geraakt theater waar een bezield muzikaal gezelschap onderdak heeft. Tess, eigenares van de club en tevens ook de hoofdact, geeft Ali een baantje als serveerster
Mama Rose doet er alles aan om haar dochter June te laten optreden en slagen op Broadway. June trouwt echter en vertrekt, waarna Mama Rose haar hoop vestigt op de jongere en minder talentvolle zus van June, Louise. Louise's carrière voert haar echter langs burlesque en stripbars en dat is niet helemaal wat Mama Rose in gedachten had.
Het jongetje Sam ziet hoe zijn ouders vermoord worden. Zijn buurvrouw Gypsy, een voormalig burlesque-danseres, ontdekt een tweede kans op leven en verlossing wanneer ze alles riskeert om hem te redden. Op de vlucht voor misdaadbaas Jack, die toevallig ook haar oude ex-geliefde is, doet Gypsy een wanhopige poging om Sam in veiligheid te brengen.
Judy O'Brien is een aspirant-ballerina in een dansgroep. Ook in het gezelschap zit Bubbles, een onbezonnen een wilde mannenverslindster die de worstelende groep verlaat voor een carrière in burlesque. Wanneer het bedrijf ontbindt, geeft Bubbles Judy een ondankbare baan als haar lakei. De twee botsen uiteindelijk als ze allebei voor dezelfde man vallen.

Tod thinks he can get what he wants from Janie, Patch thinks Janie is using her charms rather than talent to get to the top, and Janie thinks Patch is the greatest. Steve, the stage manager, has the Three Stooges helping him manage all the show girls. Fred Astaire and Nelson Eddy make appearances as famous Broadway personalities.

Warner Baxter plays the ambitious producer of a burlesque show who rises to the big time on Broadway. Alice Faye is the loyal burleycue singer who helps make Baxter a success. His head turned by sudden fame, Baxter falls under the spell of a society woman (Mona Barrie) who has theatrical aspirations of her own. She marries Baxter, then convinces him to produce a string of "artistic" plays rather than his extravagant musical revues. The plays are flops, and the woman haughtily divorces Baxter. Faithful Alice Faye, who'd gone to London when her ex-beau was married, returns to the penniless Baxter. She and her burlesque buddies team up to pull Baxter out of his rut and put him on top again.
