Scientifique réputée, elle scrute désormais les tréfonds de l'univers, à la recherche d'un hypothétique signal de vie extraterrestre, pour le compte du fortuné David Drumlin. Persuadé de travailler à fonds perdus, celui-ci la licencie, alors qu'elle pense toucher au but. Ellie décroche le soutien financier d'un milliardaire excentrique, SR Hadden, et d'un conseiller du président des États-Unis, Palmer Joss, et peut ainsi poursuivre son écoute du ciel. Au bout de longs mois, elle capte enfin un signal artificiel, en provenance de l'étoile Véga...

Récemment divorcé, Greg, dont la vie va à vau-l'eau, rencontre la délicieuse Isabel, une femme vivant dans la rue, convaincue que le monde, brisé et pollué autour d'eux, n'est pas réel. Although the mountain volcano Mauna Kea last erupted around 4,000 years ago, it is still hot today, the center of a burning controversy over whether its summit should be used for astronomical observatories or preserved as a cultural landscape sacred to the Hawaiian people. For five years the documentary production team Nā Maka o ka 'Āina ("the eyes of the land") captured on video the seasonal moods of Mauna Kea's unique 14,000-foot summit, the richly varied ecosystems that extend from sea level to alpine zone, the legends and stories that reveal the mountain's geologic and cultural history, and the political turbulence surrounding the efforts to protect the most significant temple in the islands: the mountain itself.

This observatory, the gift of James Lick, of Pennsylvania, was constructed at a cost of $700,000, being equipped with one of the most powerful telescopes that has ever been produced, and is famous the world over. The view of the Observatory is very complete, showing the style of architecture, including the glass covered dome in which are placed the various astronomical instruments. Every Saturday night throughout the year is set apart for visitors to inspect the Observatory and look through the great glass. This view shows a coach load driving up and alighting.
