V Paříži byl zavražděn hlavní správce Louvru, Jacques Sauniére. Ještě než zemřel, tak kolem sebe stačil naznačit spoustu symboů a šifer. Na místo vraždy si policejní kapitán Bezu Fache povolává newyorského univerzitního profesora a uznávaného symbologa Roberta Langdona, který byl momentálně na přednáškovém turné v Paříži. Ten naznačuje Fachemu, co všechno mohou symboly znamenat. Za chvíli dorazí na místo činu i Sophie Neveuová, která, pro změnu, pracuje na pařížském dešifrovacím oddělení. Oba si začínají uvědomovat, že je k sobě nepřihrála pouze shoda náhod, ale že Jacques Sauniére chce předat nějaké poselství. Začíná zběsilá honba, ve které se Robert se Sophií stávají zároveň hledači legendárního Svatého grálu a sami jsou kořistí pro policejního kapitána a ještě někoho. Tajemnějšího a mocnějšího, někoho, ze kterého má i samotný Vatikán husí kůži.
