Praėjus pusmečiui nuo Perl Harboro užpuolimo, Japonijos jūrų laivynas smogė JAV pajėgoms Midvėjaus atole. Ko japonai nežinojo – kad amerikiečiai, iššifravę japonų pranešimus, juos įviliojo į pasalą. Keturias dienas trukusio mūšio metu buvo subombarduoti ir nuskandinti geriausi Japonijos kariniai laivai, žuvo daugiau nei 4000 elitinių japonų karių.
