Jej dychtivosť po vedomostiach je bezodná, jej múdrosť je zdrojom úcty i závisti. Na kulisách kresťanského povstania stojí Hypatia, ktorá vkladá celú dušu do snahy zachrániť vekmi požehnanú múdrosť starovekého sveta prežívajúcu v Alexandrijskej knižnici. Druhý príbeh rozpovie Hypatiin otrok Davus (Max Minghella), ktorý sa do svojej výnimočne bystrej a príťažlivej panej zamiluje. Davusa tlačia z oboch strán mlynské kamene jeho tajnej lásky k Hypatii a predstavy slobody, čo by mohol získať pripojením ku kresťanskému hnutiu. Nad obomi sa sťahujú búrkové mračná ťažkého zápasu.
