La nau USS Voyager, de la Federació, perseguint un grup de rebels maquis entra dins una perillosa nebulosa espacial coneguda com a Badlands. Les dues naus són transportades a una base espacial llunyana en el quadrant Delta, a 75.000 anys llum de l'espai de la Federació. La tripulació de la Voyager i el maquis formen una aliança no desitjada per tal de poder rescatar el tripulants que han estat segrestats pel constructor de la base, el Guardià, que es troba agonitzant.
