도제 니우 감독이 6,70년대에 대만에서 군 생활을 한 아버지 세대의 추억을 반추하며 만든 작품. 1969년 대만의 금문도. 아직도 중국 본토와 대치중인 이곳의 해안정찰부대인 해룡 부대에 신병 파오가 전입해 온다. 하지만, 수영과 잠수를 제대로 하지 못하는 그는 곧 다른 부대로 옮겨간다. 그가 옮겨간 부대는 ‘831’ 또는 ‘군중낙원’이라 불리는 군영 내 공창이다. 이곳에서 그는 공창의 매춘부를 관리하는 일을 하게 된다. ‘831’에서 복무를 하는 동안 파오는 많은 일을 겪게 된다. 친구였던 화싱은 군내 가혹행위를 견디지 못하고 매춘부 사사와 함께 탈영을 하여 중국본토로 도주하고, 파오를 아껴주었던 특무상사 창윤샨은 사랑했던 매춘부 지아와 현실적 한계를 극복하지 못하고 비극적 결말을 맞이한다. 그리고, 파오는 아들을 위해 폭력 남편을 살해한 죄를 감형 받기 위해 ‘831’로 온 니니와 가까워 진다. 영화는 파오의 시점을 중심으로 전개된다. 화싱과 사사, 창윤샨과 지아, 파오와 니니의 이야기는 기본적으로는 그들의 ‘사랑’과 ‘공감’에 관한 것이지만 또한 파오의 성장영화이기도 하며, 또 한편으로는 중국 본토와 대만 사이의 이산민의 아픔, 여성에 대한 도덕적 관념, 억압적 군대 문화 등 60,70년대의 대만 사회의 자화상이기도 하다. 이러한 사적 경험을 통해 대만의 근대사를 이야기하는 영화 스타일은 80년대 대만 뉴웨이브의 초기 영화들과 유사하다. 허우샤오시엔 감독이 이그제큐티브 프로듀서로 편집에도 참여한 것에 눈길을 가는 이유도 이와 무관하지 않다.
