Slovenian countryside in the 18th century. The future lord of the manor, Ožbej, falls in love with the new maid, Meta. His family, however, is opposed to the match and successfully plots to keep the young couple apart. Although Meta must endure scorn and degradation at the hands of the villagers, Ožbej still cannot tear himself away from her. Five children are born of their union, all of whom are looked upon as bastards by the manor folk. Although driven by desperation to return to the manor, Ožbej still harbours the hope that he will one day be able to live together with his love. Can he survive without the woman he loves and without his children? Will he be able to survive at all?
This film is very much a docudrama which portrays the difficulties of Italian life circa 1963 due to the absence of a divorce law. Five scenarios with different actors portray realistic situations where divorce is clearly warranted but, because marriage was strictly in the purview of the Catholic Church at that time, which strictly forbade divorce, these people are shown to suffer the consequences in their daily lives. Italy got its first civilian divorce law in 1970.
Young priest Father Sebastián is assigned to a parish in San Jeronimo el Alto, where he is not welcomed by the community, particularly the resident priest Father Damián. The newcomer gradually earns the trust of the people through humor, but firmly captures their hearts by saving the town fiesta by fighting a bull when the hired torero failed to show. Father Sebastián counsels the townspeople, lecturing them on their duties in a modern society. He used the collection plate to redistribute the town's wealth more evenly.

In Russland sind Veranstaltungen zum Kulturaustausch vorgesehen: Ballett, Oper, ein Wettfischen und verschiedene Feste.

Kyril Lakota, Erzbischof von Lemberg, ist als politischer Häftling durch viele Niederungen des Lebens gegangen, als er nach 20 Jahren aus einem Arbeitslager in Sibirien freikommt. Sein Glaube und seine Menschlichkeit sind dadurch jedoch nur gefestigt worden. Als Kyril im Vatikan eintrifft, ernennt ihn der Papst zum Kardinal. Seine Kollegen, die Kardinäle Rinaldi und Leone, lernen ihn schätzen. Er selbst fühlt sich zu dem jungen Theologen David Telemond hingezogen. Dieser Priester vertritt in Anlehnung an Teilhard de Chardin Auffassungen, die ihn mit den römischen Kirchenbehörden in Konflikt gebracht haben. Als der Papst stirbt, geht Kyril aus dem Konklave überraschend als Nachfolger hervor. Seine ungewöhnliche Art befremdet bald die Traditionalisten in der Kurie.
Der junge Katholik Jean-Louis denkt ans Heiraten. Ins Auge gefasst dafür hat er eine junge Frau, die er allerdings nur von gemeinsamen Gottesdienstbesuchen her kennt. Eines Tages lädt ihn sein alter Jugendfreund Vidal zu seiner Freundin, der geschiedenen Kinderärztin Maud, ein, wo der alkoholisch-philosophische Abend damit endet, dass Maud versucht, Jean-Louis zu verführen.
