Vi får följa en man och hans fru som reser till Rom för att närvara vid deras dotters italienska bröllop, en man kallad Leopoldo som blir förväxlad med en filmstjärna, en arkitekt från Kalifornien på besök i staden med några vänner, samt två nygifta som åker till Rom för att hälsa på några släktingar men istället villar bort sig i staden.
Under en natt får vi möta fem taxichaufförer i fem olika städer - Los Angeles, New York, Rom, Paris och Helsingfors - och följa deras samtal med sina passagerare. En skådespelaragent försöker få Winona Ryder att vara med i hennes nästa film i Los Angeles, Roberto Benigni biktar sig för en dödssjuk präst i Rom, Isaac De Bankolé plockar upp en blind kvinna i Paris etc. Fem skilda historier på fyra olika språk vilka hänger samman genom den gemensamma miljön - taxibil klockan fyra på natten.
