Sommeren 1980 søker legen Barbara om utreisetillatelse fra Øst-Tyskland. Hun får avslag og sendes i stedet til et lite sykehus i et utkantstrøk. Kjæresten som allerede befinner seg i vest planlegger flukten hennes, men Barbara blir stadig mer involvert i arbeidet sitt. Når fluktdagen nærmer seg må hun foreta et livsviktig valg.

Dette er den sanne historien om de østtyske familiene Strelzyk og Wetzel, som i september 1979 skapte overskrifter over hele verden. I all hemmelighet arbeidet de med å konstruere en luftballong, som skulle gjøre det mulig for dem at flykte fra diktaturet i øst til friheten i vesten. En dristig og modig plan, hvor både forberedelsene og selve flukten, setter dem i fokus for sikkerhetstjenesten Stasi med sine informanter plassert overalt. Og når Stasi uunngåelig kommer på sporet av dem, blir familienes flukt en kamp mot klokka, hvor hvert sekund teller…

Felix from West-Berlin falls in love with Thomas in East-Berlin. At first they keep their relationship going by regular visits from Felix, but the curfew forces him to return every evening. When the East-German authorities become suspicious, Thomas decides to try and flee to the West.

Bad planning and shortages prevail on an East German construction site. Foreman Hannes Balla uses unconventional methods to overcome the problems. New Socialist Unity Party secretary Werner Horrath is charged with bringing the rough-and-ready builder crew into line. The task seems doomed to fail as the two men compete for the affections of young engineer Kati Klee. But when she gets pregnant by married man Horrath, he is in danger of being expelled from the party, and Balla takes his side...

They play regular gigs in small towns, but Sunny feels out of touch with the audience and her life as a whole. She begins a relationship with the amateur saxophonist and studied philosopher Ralph who writes her a very personal song - but his obsession with death and unfaithful lifestyle is not for her. After getting into a quarrel with a band member who harasses her and telling off a show-host she is thrown out of the band. Abandoned, she struggles to regain control over her life.

When a Polish sailor jumps ship in Britain, a couple of local intelligence operatives keep him under surveillance. Soon, he’s recruited to infiltrate a missile installation outside of East Berlin and bring back photos of the new rockets.

Persona Non Grata in his homeland, protest singer Klaus Drittemann must leave East Berlin, his wife and child and emigrate to West Berlin, where the representatives of an American record company are eagerly waiting for him. They plan to exploit his defection from communism both ideologically and financially. But Klaus, as ill-at-ease in the West as he was in the East, is reluctant to be used as an expendable commodity. Leaving his contract unsigned (or signed in his manner), he leaves for Cambridge to meet his father, a concert player, who -just like him - left East Berlin thirty years ago as Klaus was a little boy. He is accompanied by a young French journalist, Emma, who knows where his father has been living since he disappeared for more than a decade. The young lady is cooperative but might hide things from him...
