Inhabitants of a small village in Hungary deal with the effects of the fall of Communism. The town's source of revenue, a factory, has closed, and the locals, who include a doctor and three couples, await a cash payment offered in the wake of the shuttering. Irimias, a villager thought to be dead, returns and, unbeknownst to the locals, is a police informant. In a scheme, he persuades the villagers to form a commune with him.

A fines del siglo XIX, en una región inhóspita, viven el granjero Ohlsdorffer y su hija. Su supervivencia depende de un viejo y demacrado caballo, con el que Ohlsdorffer trabaja como cochero en la ciudad. Un día, el caballo se niega a salir del cobertizo. Los granjeros mantienen, sin embargo, su limitada rutina diaria: levantarse con el sol, ir por agua al pozo, cortar leña, comer una papa hervida, acostarse con la llegada de la noche... Ohlsdorffer, tullido de un brazo, necesita de su hija para vestirse y desvestirse. El caballo ya no quiere comer ni beber. Pasa un grupo de gitanos cuyo destino es América. Un vecino relata las desgracias que están ocurriendo en la ciudad. El pozo se seca y Ohlsdorffer y su hija intentan infructuosamente dejar el lugar. Se hace la noche. El fuego ya no quiere encenderse.
