Le soir venu, l'ex-portier vient en catimini récupérer sa livrée, afin de donner le change à son entourage. Mais une commère a été témoin de sa déchéance. Elle la révèle à tout le quartier, qui tourne en ridicule le pauvre homme. A bout de forces, il vient se terrer dans ses lavabos, où un veilleur de nuit le découvre, prostré...

Minoru et Isamu vivent avec leurs parents dans la banlieue de Tokyo. En rentrant de l'école, ils aiment à s'arrêter chez un voisin qui a la télévision pour regarder des matches de sumo. Leurs parents, mécontents, leur interdisent d'y retourner. Pour protester, Minoru et Isamu entament une grève de la parole, qui va provoquer par ricochet de nombreuses incompréhensions parmi les voisins.

Two men in adjoining duplexes, good friends, are enchanted by the song of a bird. One buys a small harmonica and learns to play it; he keeps his neighbor awake. The neighbor buys a larger harmonica, and an arms race ensues; the instruments get larger, until it's a piano vs. a pipe organ, and then they start bringing in larger groups of friends until an entire orchestra is playing the 1812 Overture. The houses collapse from all this, atop the dueling orchestras, and on their way up to heaven, the man puts his small harmonica up for sale.
