I 10 år har pigen Mija fra sit hjem i bjergene i Sydkorea taget sig af Okja – et enormt dyr og hendes bedste ven. Men alt bliver sat over styr, da det familieejede multinationale konglomerat Mirando Corporation kidnapper Okja til New York, hvor den imagebesatte og selvpromoverende direktør Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) har store planer med dyret.
