در آینده ای دور یک گروه قدرتمند به اسم «اتحادیه» بر کهکشان حکومت می کنند. این گروه که بصورت استبدادی بر تمام سیارات تسلط دارد همواره در تلاش هستند تا مخالفان و شورشیان را سرکوب کنند. یک گروه از این شورشیان به فرماندهی کاپیتان «مالکوم» سوار بر یک سفینه قدیمی با نام «سرنیتی» سعی دارند تا از دست نیروهای اتحادیه بگریزند. در همین زمان دختری به اسم «ریور» که قادر به خواندن ذهن افراد است موفق می شود ذهن گروهی از سیاستمداران اتحادیه را خوانده و پی به اسرارشان ببرد. به همین خاطر او به کمک برادرش «سایمن» از دست نیروهای اتحادیه و به خصوص مامور بی رحمی به اسم «آپریتیو» گریخته و در ادامه آنها به سفینه سرنیتی پناهنده می شوند.
