I efterkrigstidens Tyskland rammes teenageren Michael af skarlagensfeber. Da han bliver rask opsøger han sin sygeplejerske Hanna for at sige tak. Efter først at opfylde hendes glæde ved at få bøger læst højt, så indleder Michael en hemmelig affære med Hanna. En dag forsvinder hun pludselig og Michael ser først igen 10 år senere, da hun anklages for at have begået forbrydelser som nazist.
