Hoewel Castle op papier een drama/misdaad serie is, zijn humor en romantiek nooit veraf. Integendeel, ze vormen een essentieel bestanddeel van deze door pers en publiek uitstekend ontvangen serie. In zijn derde seizoen krijgt de serie een donker kantje wat de kijkpret alleen maar ten goede komt. De moordzaken zetten de kijker aan het denken (hoewel bepaalde twists voorspelbaar zijn), de dialogen zijn top (en doen vaak denken aan de screwball komedies ten tijde van Howard Hawks) en de romantiek loert steeds om het hoekje. Met andere woorden, een perfecte mix van spanning, humor en romantiek.

The program is the only one in which Young starred as a recurring character. Her previous anthology series on NBC placed her in the role of hostess and occasional star. Young is the first star to garner both Academy and Emmy awards, one of a relatively few to make the transition from motion picture to television.

Young had formed LYL Production Company for the series, an indication that she did not expect a premature end to the program. Norman Foster directed most of the episodes; John London and Ruth Roberts were the producers.
