تدور أحداث الفيلم في خمسينات القرن العشرين بين (أيرلندا) و(نيويورك)، حيث (إليس لاسي) تعيش في بلدة صغيرة بـ(أيرلندا) إلى جوار الوظائف المناسبة لشابة صغيرة مثلها، ولكن يتم إقناعها أن الحضر يحمل حياة أفضل لها، فترحل إلى (بروكلين) في (نيويورك)، سريعًا ما تتأقلم على الوضع هناك، وتقع في حب (توم)، ثم تحدث مأساة تعيدها مرة أخرى إلى بيتها، وهناك تجد (جيم) الذي يتودد إليها راغبًا بالتقرب منها.
