Tevje, a szegény tejesember Anatevkában, a kis ukrán faluban él a családjával. Mindennél fontosabb számára a zsidó hagyományok ápolása. Emiatt összetűzésbe kerül az öt lányával, akik a házasságközvetítő tanácsai helyett inkább a szívükre hallgatnak. Nem csoda, hogy egyik kérő sem tetszik Tevjének, aki a kis közösségüket félti. A zsidók életét azonban más is fenyegeti: kitelepítések, pogromok, erőszakos cselekmények. Tevjének be kell látnia, hiába gondolta, hogy üzletet tud kötni az Úrral, a valóságban minden másként fest.
