Los Angeles 1970: Der Privatdetektiv und Drogenliebhaber Larry "Doc" Sportello staunt nicht schlecht, als seine Ex-Freundin Shasta eines Abends urplötzlich bei ihm auf der Matte steht. Sie erzählt ihm von ihrer Affäre mit dem Milliardär Mickey Wolfman sowie dem Plan von dessen Frau Sloane und ihrem Liebhaber, den reichen Bauherrn zu entführen und in eine psychiatrische Anstalt zu stecken. Doc soll der verliebten Shasta nun helfen, dieses Vorhaben zu verhindern. Doch kaum hat der Ermittler mit seinen ersten Nachforschungen begonnen, verschwindet Mickey tatsächlich schon spurlos. Während Doc seine Bemühungen zur Aufklärung des Falls verstärkt, bekommt er es nicht nur mit seinem verfeindeten Ex-Kollegen Christian "Bigfoot" Bjornsen, sondern auch mit mehr und mehr zwielichtigen Gestalten zu tun. Dabei verstrickt er sich immer tiefer in Ärger, aus dem ein unbeschadetes Entkommen zunehmend unwahrscheinlicher wird.

Denn dort trifft er auf Lyn Cassady, ebenfalls Mitglied dieser seltsamen Psychokrieger, die in den 80ern von Althippie Bill Django ausgebildet wurden und sich selbst „Jedi-Krieger“ nennen. Für Bob klingt das nach einer tollen Story und so schließt er sich seinem neuen Bekannten an, um ihn bei einem absoluten Geheimauftrag in der Wüste zu begleiten. Eine irrwitzige Odyssee beginnt.
