거리에서 마약을 몰래 파는 19세의 소년 스트라이크. 그는 동네 마약 갱단의 두목인 로드니 리틀에게 충성을 증명하기 위해 다른 마약상 대릴을 죽이라는 명령을 받는다. 그를 죽이기로 한 날 밤, 스트라이크는 용기를 얻기 위해 술집으로 갔다가 형 빅터를 만나 술에 취한 형에게 자신의 살인 계획을 틸어놓고 대릴을 죽이기 위해 나선다. 잠시 후 경찰이 출동하고 네 발의 총을 맞고 쓰러진 대릴의 시체가 옮겨진다. 편집광적인 강력계 형사 로코는 스트라이크를 범인으로 지목하여 그의 뒤를 추적하기 시작하고, 스트라이크를 내논 자식으로 여기는 어머니와 동네의 어느 누구도 그의 편을 들어주려 하지 않는다. 또한 대릴에게 살인을 명령했던 리틀마저 스트라이크의 입을 막기 위해 음모를 꾸미게 되는데...
미망인 사라는 평소에 TV 다이어트 강의 <태피 티본스 쇼>를 보는 것이 유일한 낙이다. 그러던 어느날 사라는 그 TV 쇼의 출연 섭외를 받고 들떠, 남편과 함께 참석한 아들의 고교 졸업식 때 입었던 아름다운 빨간 드레스 속의 자신을 상상하지만 살이 찐 그녀에게 드레스는 너무 작아져 버렸다. 그래도 시청자들에게 빨간 드레스 속의 모습을 보여주겠다는 일념으로 결국 의사를 만나 알약을 복용하면서 위험한 다이어트를 감행한다. 한편, 약을 사기 위해 엄마의 애장품 1호 TV를 동네 중고점에 끊임없이 팔아치우는 사라가 가장 사랑하는 아들 해리는 삶의 목표 없이 헤매이는 아름다운 여자친구 마리온과 달콤하고 행복한 미래를 꿈꾸며 외부의 현실과는 단절된 채 살아간다. 그러던 중 해리의 친구 타이론과 함께 한탕 해 멋지게 살아보자고 결심한 이들은 마약 딜러로 나서 성공하지만 모두 헤로인 중독자가 된다. 처음에 쉽게 얻어진 승리감에 도취한 사라는 점점 더 많은 양의 약을 복용하면서 수척해지고 방향감을 잃어간다. 이제는 자신의 아파트에 고립되어 냉장고, TV가 자신을 공격하는 여러가지 환각에 사로잡히고, 타이론은 거래 중 경찰에 잡혀 보석금으로 모은 돈 모두를 날리며 예기치 못한 문제에 부딪히는데...
감독이자 이 영화에서 배우로 맹활약한 토미 웨소(Tommy Wiseau)가 2003년에 제작한 영화. 곧 결혼할 커플과 예비신랑의 절친 사이에 벌어지는 삼각관계를 다루는 멜로드라마...라는데 전개며 줄거리가 정말로 뜬금없다. 인물들이 전혀 이해할 수 없는 행동을 하는 건 기본이고, 성격 또한 지속적으로 바뀌며 스크립트도 엉망으로 꼬여있다. 그 중에서도 시도 때도 없이 나오는 불필요한 섹스신은 도저히 이해할 수가 없는 수준이다. 로튼 토마토 지수는 36%로, 배트맨과 로빈이나 그린 랜턴: 반지의 선택보다도 다소 높은 수치이나 실제로는 그 작품들보다도 괴작으로, 그나마 있는 호평들은 "이건 너무 못 만들어서 예술이다"라는 의미로 높은 점수를 준 것이다. IMDB에도 더 룸이 역사상 최고의 작품이라는 개그 리뷰들이 상당수 존재한다. 세계 최악의 영화 10위로 당당히 선정되었으나 이것은 순전히 예산낭비, 극취향, 아까운 시간을 날려버린 팬들의 분노 등을 이유로 더 룸보다 불편함을 선사하여 순위에 높게 선정된 영화들 때문이지, 실상으로는 대체적으로 더 룸보다는 논리적이고 연기도 괜찮은 작품들이다. 하지만 이러한 괴상한 점들로 인해 입소문이 퍼지기 시작하며 어느새 이 영화는 컬트 영화의 반열에 등극했고, 외계로부터의 9호 계획를 뒤잇는 역사상 망작 영화의 대명사로 유명해졌다.

Luka Banjanin is an unemployed young man living with his parents in Belgrade. Over the side of the silent liner in the darkness slips the package of smuggled narcotics, introducing us to the complex problem which involves all races and classes of man. We see many aspects of addiction - the addict preparing an injection, a group waiting tensely for their dope peddler; agents preparing and adulterating the illegal product; the police catching a pusher red-handed. International and national authorities are working from two angles - suppression of the illicit traffic; and where possible, rehabilitation of the addict.
