Evangelion, auch kurz NGE oder EVA ist eine international erfolgreiche Anime-Fernsehserie aus dem Jahr 1995. Sie bildet die Grundlage für mehrere später erschienene Filme, Mangas und Videospiele und gilt als eine der bedeutendsten Anime-Produktionen. Das Werk nimmt Bezug auf viele ältere Filme, Serien und Bücher und hatte großen Einfluss auf nachfolgende Produktionen. NGE erschloss dem Medium Anime in Japan und international ein neues Publikum.
Die Serie handelt vom Kampf gegen „Engel“ genannte Kreaturen unbekannter Herkunft, die die Menschheit angreifen. Ihnen werden von Jugendlichen gesteuerte Kampfmaschinen entgegengesetzt, die Evangelions. Mit fortschreitender Handlung werden zunehmend auch die psychischen Probleme der Charaktere thematisiert. Der Anime ist in die Genres Science-Fiction, Action und Mecha einzuordnen und enthält verschiedene Elemente aus Philosophie und Psychologie.
Man schreibt das Jahr 101 A.G., Advanced Generation. Einige hundert Jahre nachdem die Menschheit den Weltraum kolonisiert hat, wird die Weltraumkolonie Angel plötzlich von einem unbekannten Feind angegriffen und zerstört. Dieses Ereignis ging als „Der Tag an dem der Engel vom Himmel fiel“ in die Geschichte ein. Sieben Jahre später erreicht der Krieg mit den Feinden die ‒ einstmals friedliche ‒ Kolonie auf der der sieben Jahre alte Furitto Asuno lebt. Als Furittos Mutter infolge des Angriffs stirbt, wird ihm das „AGE Device“ anvertraut, ein Datenspeicher, der von Generation zu Generation in seiner Familie weitergegeben wird. Im Speicher finden sich die Baupläne für „Gundam“, einen antiken Mobile Suit, der als Retter bekannt ist. Furitto beschließt, den Gundam zu bauen. Der Gundam ist ausgestattet mit dem AGE-System, das es ihm erlaubt, sich automatisch weiterzuentwickeln. Als jedoch die UE plötzlich die Basis angreifen, muss Furitto selbst mit dem Gundam gegen sie kämpfen.
Die Eingreiftruppe Mithril kommt zum Einsatz, wenn das Gleichgewicht der Weltmächte zu kippen droht. Die neuste Mission betraut Sergeant Sosuke Sagara und sein Team mit der Aufgabe, das Schulmädchen Kaname unauffällig zu beschützen, da sie wertvolle Informationen über Waffentechnologien in sich trägt. Sosuke wird in die Schulklasse des Mädchens eingeschleust, um stets in Kanames Nähe zu sein.
Die Geschichte spielt in der Macross Zeitleiste um das Jahr 2059. Diese Serie handelt von Alto Saotome, Ranka Lee und einen Pop-Idol namens Sheryl Nome, die sich an Bord der Macross Frontier Kolonisationsflotte befinden. Nach dem Krieg gegen die Zentradi hat sich die Menschheit über das ganze Universum ausgebreitet, um ihr Überleben zu gewährleisten. Die Macross Frontier-Flotte ist Teil der Bemühungen zur Erhaltung und Verbreitung der Kultur der Menschheit.
Wir schreiben das Jahr 3394, tausend Jahre nachdem die Menschheit durch die sogenannten Gauna nahezu ausgelöscht und die Erde zerstört wurde. Ein Teil der Menschheit konnte sich jedoch auf riesigen Raumschiffen, die aus Trümmern der Erde gebaut wurden, in die Weiten des Weltalls flüchten. Eines dieser Schiffe ist die Sidonia auf dem sich über die Jahrhunderte eine eigene Zivilisation gebildet hat. Eine Zivilisation basierend auf dem Vorbild der japanischen Gesellschaft und Lebensweisen. Die Forschung auf Sidonia ermöglicht die Reproduktion durch Clonen, asexuelle Fortpflanzung und genetische Veränderungen wie z.B. die Fähigkeit der Photosynthese bei Menschen.
Die Motive der Gauna, die Menschheit zu bedrohen, liegen jedoch trotz der vielen Jahre des Konflikts immer noch im Verborgenen.
In diese Welt wird Nagate Tanikaze geboren und wuchs bei seinem Großvater versteckt im Untergrund der Stadt Sidonia auf. Gemeinsam mit seinem Großvater, übte er in einem Simulator, der für die Bedienung von mechanischen Wächtern erschaffen wurde. Als sein Großvater eines Tages stirbt, wird Tanikaze durch Zufall entdeckt. Als man ihn auf seine Kampffertigkeiten testet stellt sich heraus, dass er das Zeug zum Piloten eines echten Wächters hat und mehr noch einen besonderen Wächter älteren Modells fliegen kann. Somit ist Tanikaze quasi auserwählt sich in den Überlebenskampf gegen die Gauna an vorderster Front zu stürzen.

Mazinger Z has spawned several sequels and spinoff series, among them UFO Robot Grendizer and Mazinkaiser. It was a very popular cartoon in Mexico during the 1980s, where it was dubbed into Spanish directly from the Japanese version, keeping the Japanese character names and broadcasting all 92 episodes, unlike the version aired in the U.S.
