Caesar et les singes vivent maintenant dans une forêt près de San Francisco, dix ans après leur évasion. Ils y ont établi une société et même une école. Alors que la majorité des humains de la planète a été décimée par un virus, quelques survivants se sont installés dans San Francisco. Lorsqu'ils entrent en contact avec les singes afin d'accéder à un barrage hydroélectrique qui pourrait leur fournir du courant, la plupart des singes, dont Koba, sont craintifs. Leur leader bienveillant, Caesar, décide de faire confiance aux humains.
