Když doráží major Foster v listopadu roku 1918 se svými muži na jedno pařížské nádraží, z 8000 legionářů, kteří s ním šli do boje, zbývá 200 mužů. Už na nádraží probíhá nábor nových vojáků. Jedním z nich je i Marco Segrain, zatčený zloděj šperků, kterému se podařilo utéci svým strážcům. Sám Foster je Američanem. Po krvavém nasazení na frontě první světové války je jeho jednotka poslána do Maroka, kde má bránit vykopávky proti nepřátelským beduínským kmenům.
Listopad 1918. Do konce světové války zbývá jen pár dní. Poručík Henri d´Aulnay-Pradelle je přesto ochotný kvůli uznání a povýšení jít i přes mrtvoly a posílá svou jednotku do nesmyslného útoku. Tato zbytečná zteč na kótu 113 nerozlučitelně spojí dva vojíny, nenápadného účetního Alberta Maillarda a nadaného umělce z bohaté rodiny Édouarda Péricourta. Albert skončí po výbuchu zasypaný v zákopu a Édouard ho vyhrabe a zachrání. Hned nato jej ale zásáhne střepin a přijde o kus obličeje. Toto znetvoření ovlivní životní příběh obou vojáků i po demobilizaci. Albert se stane Édouardovým pečovatelem a nakonec společně připraví monumentální podvod postavený na národním uctívání válečných hrdinů pomocí pomníků. A poručík Pradelle mezitím bezostyšně vydělává na státní zakázce založené na exhumaci padlých a na výstavbě válečných hřbitovů. Jejich cesty se tak musí zákonitě protnout.

To Eli, San Willow seems to be as fabled as Xanadu and quite as remote. In essence, "Ace Eli and Rodger of the Skies" is about the adventures of Rodger and Eli getting from nowhere to nowhere. Eli, a killer with the ladies at first, always leaves them unsatisfied. He seems to have a sex problem. Rodger spends a lot of his time getting his dad out of scrapes. He also drinks, smokes and goes to sleep at night crying for his deceased mom.
