Hrdiny romantického příběhu jsou dvě děti, Richard a Emmelina, které ztroskotají společně s lodním kuchařem Paddym Buttonem na opuštěném tichomořském ostrově. Starý námořník sice zemře, ale předtím ještě naučí obě děti jak přežít. Naštěstí je ostrov plný ovoce a moře plné ryb. Roky plynou, oba malí trosečníci dospívají a jejich vztah se postupně mění v lásku, z níž se po čase narodí syn, který dostane jméno Paddy, po kuchaři Buttonovi.
Konec 19. století. Na lodi, jíž cestuje mladá vdova Sarah se svojí roční dcerkou Lilli, vypukne cholera. Sarah s Lilli a s dvouletým chlapečkem, kterého námořníci našli v bárce na širém moři, jsou vysazeni se zásobami do malé loďky. Vítr je zanese na opuštěný tichomořský ostrov. Sarah vychovává Lilli a chlapečka, kterému dá jméno Richard, v duchu viktoriánské morálky. Ale obě děti jsou s postupujícím věkem stále více fascinovány rozdíly ve své fyziognomii. Když Sarah zemře na zápal plic, Lillia a Richard jsou odkázáni jeden na druhého. Daří se jim utajit svou přítomnost na ostrově před kanibaly, kteří sem pravidelně připlouvají provádět své krvavé rituály. Na prahu dospělosti se Lilli a Richard do sebe zamilují a začnou spolu žít jako muž a žena. Jejich idylu přeruší příjezd americké lodi. Oba mladí lidé se za dramatických okolností musí rozhodnout, zda se vrátí do civilizace či nikoli..
Dva spolužáci – premiantka Emma a flákač Dean - jedou společně s dalšími studenty lodí na školní výlet do Trinidadu. Přestože mají pramálo společného, ocitnou se oba na divoké party na palubě. Během zákroku policie přepadne Emma do moře a Dean ji přes palubu skočí zachránit. Dvojice pak na bezmotorovém člunu pádluje tak dlouho, než narazí na opuštěný ostrov. Zatímco je zoufale hledají rodiče, Emma s Deanem se ve snaze přežít spoléhají jeden na druhého. Čím více času spolu tráví, tím jsou si také bližší. Navzdory rozdílným povahám mezi nimi vzplane láska.
