1932. New York: Rayford Gibson kisstílű tolvaj éppen most szabadult. Első útja Spanky illegális bárjába vezet, ahol hamar kiszemeli magának az est első ellopnivaló pénztárcájának tulajdonosát. Így vissza tudná fizetni rögtön régi tartozását a bártulajdonosnak. Claude Banks, az áldozat viszont jövő héten kezdene egy bankban dolgozni, végre rendeződnének dolgai. Rayford későn látja meg, hogy Claude pénztárcája szinte üres, Claude viszont nem tudta kifizetni a számlát: ezért Spanky emberei elkapják őket. Meghagyja életüket, ha elvállalnak neki egy munkát. Szeszcsempésznek állnak a Mississippi mentén, de nincs szerencséjük, hamar elkapják őket. Hatvan év börtönre ítélik mindkettejüket. A macska-kutya párosnak elég sok ideje maradt arra, hogy végiggondolják, kit is lehet okolni a történtekért.

Scorpio eventually takes over Frank's operation, beats a rival gang, becomes wealthy and dominates the city for several years until a secret group of 6 masked businessmen have him prosecuted and sent to the electric chair.

America's DJ Dick Clark and Robert Walker Jr. star as two country boys who decide to rob a pile of cash from a bootlegger, assisted by the man's restless wife (Diane Varsi). But the heist doesn't go as planned and takes a tragic turn. The trio of would-be thieves then takes off for California, but with the police already on their tail, it's clear that a trail of blood and death is going to follow them all the way there.

In a small rural town hit hard by the Depression, Katie Connors resides in a middle-class home with her bootlegging husband Melvin. When the opportunity arises to bump him off without getting her hands dirty, she takes a chance she may never get again. After his murder at the hands of criminal Richard Hayden, she begins to receive inopportune visits by Melvin's old business partners about a large shipment of moonshine in her possession. Contacting the FBI for help, agent Ron Sheridan is assigned to her case and develops an unrequited love for Katie. But when a full-scale war develops, she learns the FBI may not be much help to her as she thought, and Katie must take matters into her own hands to pay off her husband's debts for good.

Whiskey-making, one of the oldest traditions in the mountains, has been illegal since the end of the 18th century. Tradition is a portrait of Appalachian moonshiner Logan Adams, who began practicing his trade as a boy because “back then there wasn’t any jobs…about like now.” Adams discusses his vocation and why he continues to make whiskey despite having served a string of jail sentences for the practice. Adams’ story and family interviews are intercut with a federal revenue agent who describes the methods used by law enforcement agents to apprehend moonshiners. The film concludes with a tour by Adams of his still as he describes the whiskey-making process. This film will be of interest to anyone interested in moonshining, the economic and traditional forces that motivate illegal whiskey making, the law and its penalties, as well as anyone interested in what a practice long stereotyped by outsiders really entails.
