Clark Griswold heeft de gezinsvakantie goed uitgekiend. Samen met zijn vrouw Ellen, zijn zoon Rusty en zijn dochter Audrey wil hij heel Amerika doorkruisen om een paar dolle dagen te beleven in de pretparken aan de westkust.
