게리 허스트윗이 오랜 기간 작업해 온 디자인 다큐멘터리 3부작을 완성시키는 어버나이즈드는 제목 그대로 도시화와 도시 디자인에 대한 다큐멘터리이다. 새로운 도전을 하고 있는 세계 곳곳의 혁신 도시들을 방문하여 이 시도에 참여한 아키텍트, 도시 설계자, 행정가, 철학자, 사상가들과의 인터뷰를 담는다. 2050년이 되면 세계 인구의 75%가 도시에서 거주할 것이라는 전망. 하지만 도시들은 현재 성장과 개발, 주택 부족, 교통체증, 환경오염, 시민참여 등 수많은 문제에 직면해 있다. 이를 해결하기 위한 방법은 과연 있는가? 있다면 대안은 무엇인가?

It follows the story of a migrant family from the demolition of their neighborhood to their on-going struggle for housing rights. The film takes a look at the city on a macro level and through the eyes of experts, going from the tops of mushrooming skyscrapers to the depths of the railway tunnel under the Bosphorous strait; from the historic neighborhoods in the south to the forests in the north; from isolated islands of poverty to the villas of the rich. It's an Istanbul going from 15 million to 30 million. It's an Istanbul going from 2 million cars to 8 million. It's the Istanbul of the future that will soon engulf the entire region. It's an Istanbul nobody has ever seen before.
