善於易容術的大盜方托馬斯（Jean Marais 飾）假扮成律師來到拉謝裡爵士家，他提出所有的富人要想活命就必須繳納生存權力稅，否則將死在自己的手中。身價排名世界第三的拉謝裡爵士當然要首當其衝，只要他肯交錢，其他富豪自然會效仿。方托馬斯離開前限定了交錢的日期，拉謝裡爵士只得向警方尋求幫助。此前曾多次與方托馬斯交手的記者方多爾和太太、警長瑞夫等人均受到拉謝裡爵士的邀請來到城堡。瑞夫警長因數次讓方托馬斯從自己的眼皮子底下逃走而耿耿於懷，他發誓要趁這次機會將其捉拿歸案。不知為什麼，瑞夫警長總在城堡中發現異常現象，而且全部都是拉謝裡爵士不同的死狀。但每當人們趕到現場時，卻沒有任何異樣。漸漸的，大家開始懷疑瑞夫警長的精神出現了問題，而他本人也為無法解釋這一奇怪現象感到莫名的恐懼和擔心。事實上這一切都是方托馬斯搞的鬼，他早已在城堡中挖掘了密道，他要用這種方式逐漸瓦解人們對瑞夫警長的信任。皇家狩獵日到了，在拉謝裡爵士的盛情邀請下，所有賓客都一同參與了狩獵活動。方托馬斯假扮成拉謝裡爵士，並安排手下開始對賓客們採取先分流再綁架的方式準備將他們全部一網打盡。恰好拉謝裡爵士的秘書安德烈和爵士夫人有染，他們一直在密謀找機會殺死爵士從而得到巨額遺產，狩獵正是個好機會。於是安德烈悄悄跟蹤方托馬斯假扮的拉謝裡爵士，試圖將他殺死。然而當安德烈發現眼前的這個人並不是拉謝裡爵士的時候，他的死期也就到了。方托馬斯殺死安德烈的過程被方多爾的太太發現，方托馬斯的手下開始對她窮追不捨，幸好方多爾及時趕到並制服了對方。當大家返回城堡後拉謝裡爵士忽然舉著一封方托馬斯留下的最後通牒跑到大家面前，看來方托馬斯即將現身了。瑞夫警長在拉謝裡爵士的房間中安裝了報警裝置，只要方托馬斯一出現拉謝裡爵士便可以啟動裝置，瑞夫警長和手下將第一時間從隔壁房間趕到這裡。當拉謝裡爵士手捧向多個富豪徵集來的鑽石走進自己的房間時，方多爾夫婦忽然從窗口闖入。他們揭穿了方托馬斯的詭計，並確認眼前的拉謝裡爵士就是方托馬斯假扮的。方托馬斯鎮定地啟動了報警裝置，瑞夫警長衝入拉謝裡爵士的房間，但一切都太遲了，方托馬斯從暗道從容離開，根本沒人能夠阻止他。方托馬斯再一次得手了，瑞夫警長為此捶胸頓足，但一切既成事實，只能等待下次機會再與方托馬斯一決高下。
