미이케 다카시의 신작은 늘 예측불허다. 그의 영화에 익숙한 시네필들도 <이조>를 보곤 다시 한 번 한 방 먹었다고 생각할지 모른다. 이 영화는 극단의 폭력 묘사로 금기의 울타리를 비웃는다. 막부시대에 사형 당했던 자객 이조가 천국도 지옥도 갈 수 없는 상태에서 여기저기를 떠돌며 살인을 일삼는 이 영화의 상영 시간 내내 이조의 칼 아래 숱한 사람들이 죽는다. 이제 그만이라고 스크린을 향해 소리치고 싶을 만큼 처절한 폭력 장면이 이어지는 사이에 모든 것이 뒤죽박죽이 돼버린다. 이 영화에서 시대와 공간을 따지는 것은 아무 의미가 없다. 이조는 어느 시대, 어느 곳에나 출몰하며 길에서 만난 이들을 모조리 죽인다. 폭력 묘사의 금기를 깨트린 세계 영화의 이단자들은 물론이고 미이케 다카시의 전작들과 비교해도 <이조>는 저만치 멀리 나아간 작품이다. 영화 속에서 이조는 군주를 찾아 나선 것이지만 여하튼 살인기계 같은 존재이며 스스로도 자기 존재 이유를 묻고 있는 듯이 보인다. 영화가 끝나면 관객은 머릿속이 윙윙거리는 착각을 느낀다. <이조>는 도무지 어떤 경계에도 속하지 않으며 어떤 정의도 피해나간다. 기이하지만 강렬한 무의식의 악몽과 우상파괴 정신의 혼합물이다.
