Elke winter gaan de keizerpinguïns in Antarctica op een lange reis. Eenmaal aangekomen op de plaats van bestemming begint de paring, waarna de vrouwtjes een ei leggen. Daarna keren de vrouwtjes terug naar de oceaan om aan te sterken. De mannetjes blijven achter om de eieren uit te broeden en na twee maanden komen de eieren uit. Wanneer de vrouwtjes terugkeren om de kuikens van eten te voorzien, draaien de rollen om: de moeders blijven achter, terwijl de mannetjes terugkeren naar de zee om eindelijk te kunnen eten. Zodra het warmer wordt, keren ook de vrouwtjes met de kuikens terug naar de zee en leren de kuikens te overleven.
De kapitein heeft een schip geërfd, maar moet naar Turkije afreizen om het op te eisen. Daar aangekomen blijkt het schip in erg slechte staat.
