L'estiu del 1944, l'Exèrcit Roig avança cap a Varsòvia procedent de l'est. L'Exèrcit Nacional polonès, amb l'esperança de rebre ajuda dels soviètics, inicia una revolta contra les forces d'ocupació alemanyes. L'Stefan, que acaba d'entrar a la Resistència polonesa, s'uneix a un grup de joves insurgents i s'enamora d'una infermera, l'Ala, però també té sentiments envers la Kama, una combatent. Durant l'aixecament, l'Stefan s'enfrontarà a la crua realitat de la brutal repressió alemanya i la passivitat dels soviètics, que tindrà com a resultat l'esclafament de la revolta i la destrucció de la ciutat.
