A film Chico Xavier brazil író és médium regényén alapszik. Xavier élete során 92 könyvet közvetített mint médium. A film annak a léleknek a történetét meséli el, aki neki ezeket a könyveket sugallta. Médiumitása azzal kezdődött, hogy 1959-ben ún. keresztírás eredményeként, vagyis úgy, hogy Andre Luiz elhunyt orvos neki és a tőle 800 km távolságban lakó Waldo Vieirának úgy diktálta a “Fejlődés két világban” című művet, hogy egy fejezetet Chicónak, a másikat Waldónak felváltva anélkül, hogy az egyik tudná, mit kapott a másik. Utólag azután Chicó utasítást kapott szellem-vezetőjétől Emánueltől, hogy lépjen érintkezésbe Waldo Vieriával, és illessze össze egy egésszé a könyv fejezeteit.
