In un piccolo villaggio della pianura ungherese, alla vigilia di un’eclisse di sole, fa la sua comparsa un circo costituito esclusivamente da due attrazioni: un principe e una balena. Janos, un giovane postino, è l’occhio attraverso cui si vede svolgersi l’intera vicenda. Il paesino, segnato da lotte intestine e presagi di guerra, si fa presto coinvolgere dalla dialettica del principe e si appresta a un massacro di innocenti.
La storia si incentra sul collasso di una fattoria collettiva ai tempi della fine del comunismo in Ungheria. Una dozzina di individui abbrutiti vive una vita senza speranza in quello che resta di una cooperativa agricola, nell'attesa ansiosa di andarsene. Sperano in un futuro migliore grazie al denaro che riceveranno dalla chiusura della comunità. Il carismatico Irimiás, che sparì due anni prima dalla comunità e che ormai tutti davano per morto, sta per tornare. La voce del suo ritorno rapidamente arriva al villaggio e il film si concentra sull'impatto e le conseguenze che il ritorno di Irimias ha sugli abitanti della fattoria che si troveranno a far fronte non solo alle astuzie di Irimiás ma anche ai conflitti che dividono gli uni dagli altri.

She is a confident, energetic career woman who has managed to work her way up to become a successful television journalist. She goes to visit her parent's country, to do a story about the children of immigrant workers in their home country. Although she says she doesn´t need a "home" any more, even she feels strange in her own country. Peter is a rather "untypical" sort of man: a dreamer, a thinker. He has given up his steady job as a composer for advertising films and is divorced. He goes to Jugoslavia to find something out about the past. He travels to the places where his father was stationed during the Second World War.

The story begins at the premier of director Viktor Rote's newest film "The Tin Cat," which stars his popular wife Riki Rote. The film's writer and Viktor's brother Richard is miffed when he is not allowed into the screening. Viktor's ambitious mistress and aspiring star the Nina is also not invited in. The film is a hit so Rote is allowed to begin his new film by producer George Kuballa. George is also head of the studio. His rich and frequently rejected wife is Lore, a major financial studio backer who prefers spending her time consorting with her handsome young chauffeur.
