Tolv år efter afslutningen af 2. Verdenskrig arbejder den tidligere SS-officer Max som natportier på et hotel i Wien. Her møder han tilfældigt Lucia, som han udnyttede seksuelt i den kz-lejr, hvor han var lejrchef. De har knapt genkendt hinanden, før de genoptager deres herre-slave-forhold. Til stor skepsis for Max's gamle SS-kammerater.

A forty year old woman, who has been in an asylum, goes to live with her brother's family. She proves incapable of adapting herself to family life, takes refuge in the country alone with her memories, and is later returned to the asylum.
