De legendarische rockband Foo Fighters neemt zijn intrek in een landhuis in Encino dat bol staat van de gruwelijke rock-'n-rollgeschiedenis om er hun langverwachte 10e album op te nemen. Eenmaal in het huis krijgt Dave Grohl te maken met bovennatuurlijke krachten die zowel de voltooiing van het album als het leven van de band bedreigen.

Diep in de vallei van San Fernando, te midden van rijen vervallen pakhuizen, stond rock 'n roll's best bewaarde geheim: Sound City. Terwijl de legende groeide, kwamen baanbrekende bands en artiesten als Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Metallica en Nirvana hier om hun muzikale magie op tape vast te leggen. Middels interviews en optredens vertelt men niet alleen het verhaal van dit heiligdom, maar verzamelt regisseur en muzikant Grohl tevens enkele van de grootste muzikanten om te werken aan een nieuw album.

“PLAY” by Dave Grohl celebrates the rewards and challenges of dedicating one’s life to playing and mastering a musical instrument. Part one opens with narrated behind the scenes footage featuring discussion of the love of playing music and the lifelong relationship with an instrument, and detailing the process and challenges of recording and filming this unique performance. “PLAY" film then segues to the titular 23-minute, one-man-band instrumental recording on which Grohl plays all seven instruments on the track, all live.
