V Štipu, malem makedonskem mestu, lokalni duhovnik vsako leto januarja vrže v reko leseni križ, za katerim se požene množica moških. Tistega, ki ga ujame, bosta vse leto spremljala sreča in uspeh. Tokrat za križem skoči tudi Petrunija in se že naslednji trenutek dvigne iz vode s trofejo v roki. Moški so besni: kako si drzne v njihovem ritualu sodelovati ženska? Vse mesto je na nogah, a Petrunija se ne da: dobila je svoj križ in ne bo se mu odrekla.

Jugoslavija leta 1987. Zdolgočaseni vojaki na jugoslovansko-albanski meji komaj čakajo, da odslužijo obvezni vojaški rok in se vrnejo domov. Vedno pijani poročnik Safet Pašić nekega dne pod trebušno prepono začuti močno bolečino. Na pomoč pokliče Sinišo, edinega medicinsko usposobljenega vojaka v enoti, ki ugotovi, da ima njegov nadrejeni spolno bolezen. Ker poročnik ne želi, da bi njegova žena izvedela za njegove težave, išče izgovor, da bi ostal v vojašnici in se izognil vrnitvi domov. Pod pretvezo, da albanska vojska pripravlja napad na Jugoslavijo, razglasi izredne razmere.

V borbi z mlini na veter Nikolo naprej ženeta ljubezen in obup. Ta oče se vse do konca ne bo odpovedal veri v pravičnost in pravici do vzgajanja lastnih otrok.

Peter is in his early forties and until recently he worked in a factory, but after Slovenia's integration into the European Union, the factory closed down and Peter and his colleagues have been made redundant. Slowly but surely, he is losing self-confidence and self-esteem.

Guti (35, Slovenian) and Sig (50, Icelander) wake up naked and handcuffed to one another on a riverbank near Ljubljana. Sig suffers from memory loss, while Guti recalls a fight with skinheads Sid drunkenly participated in and Guti tried peacefully to intervene in. Sig has no passport or any clue about his identity—the skinheads have taken everything he owned. Guti is trying to build a new home for himself on a river raft after losing his house to the bank and his life to his ex-wife. He introduces Sig to his friends—suburban misfits, who remind Sig of a legend of the hidden people.
