EYES ABOVE THE CROSSES is a film about Stanislovas Jameikis who was deported in 1941 and overcame a six hundred kilometers long perilous march through Siberia.

Directed by Raimondas Vabalas, an eccentric and buffoonish tragicomedy and a satirical pamphlet, making fun of chauvinism and petty politicians.

This “naive” film, as the author himself calls it, is a kind of confession of a young man.

The focus of attention in one of the earliest films by a highly prolific documentary director Edmundas Zubavicius is a veterinary clinic in Kaunas; the observation of its daily routine reveals the longing for human sympathy as if yearning for a prayer. Quite a sophisticated relation between the visual and the sound is outweighed by the junctions of poetic film language and realistic shots. They invite to contemplate the relationship between nature and man.

Glastnost and Lithuania’s eventual independence from the USSR open up the possibility of examining previously banned subjects: death, postwar resistance and – as in We Were at Our Own Field – the damage done by the Soviet occupation and the simple longing for home.

The centerpiece of A. Grikevicius's film is Tomas Petreikis, the chief engineer of the machine factory in Kaunas F. Dzeržinskis. Rather than creating a regular, conjunctural narrative about the hero of socialist work that exceeds production norms, the director captures another personality of his film's hero. After work, Tom is an entertaining dancer, teacher and contest judge. "Construction and dancing? No, they don't not have any relation," T. Petreikis answers the question posed by the journalist. However, the film observes the parallels that reveal the precision of the constructor-dancer, the perfection of the goal, both by controlling the work of the machine tools and by teaching pairs of dancers to rotate on the parquet, imply another answer.

In a pre-WWII Lithuanian town, occupied with unemployed workers and crooks of various kinds, lives Adam, a naive young man with no job and a lot of dreams. His closest friend is the Captain, an old sea wolf with many tales to tell about Singapore, Hawaii and other equally exotic and sunny places. Inspired by his stories, Adam manages to get a job in an emigration bureau and starts saving for his ticket to leave abroad.

This film details the dismantling of the old railway Siaurukas in Lithuania and the construction of its new modern replacement. The old railway and the new railway become the symbol of the clash between the archaic rural Lithuania and Soviet industrialization. The film was often considered as an expression of the archetypes of Lithuanian character.

The main hero of this film is the city of Vilnius. Vilnius is also a metaphor for the historicity of Lithuania. However, this film is unique not only for its cinematographic historical reflections on the statehood of Lithuania; it also reveals the history of cinema, encompassing both Soviet montage techniques and the first traces of cinéma-vérité in Lithuanian cinema.

Under the USSR oppression a family breaks up and its members find themselves on opposite sides of the barricades. Based on the Mykolas Sluckis' novel, the film tells the story of a dramatic and painful reality of the post-war Lithuania.
