Roy (Harrelson) en zijn vrouw Jessie (Mortimer) keren na hun liefdadigheidswerk in Peking samen terug naar huis met de legendarische Transsiberië Express via Moskou. Onderweg ontmoeten ze rugzaktoeristen Carlos en Abby die op wereldreis zijn. De reis krijgt een onverwachte wending als Roy de trein mist na een korte tussenstop. An earthquake destroys a Russian Nuclear Power plant.

In 1942, in Vilna, the Nazi annihilate 55,000 Jews and squeeze the 15,000 survivors in a seven blocks ghetto. The twenty-two year old sadistic commander Kittel is assigned to administrate the ghetto in the capital of Lithuania, becoming the master of life or death. When he finds the gorgeous Hayyah sneaking with one kilo of beam stolen from the German army, he sentences her to death; but when he is informed that she was a former successful singer, he decides to activate the old theater and promote shows in the ghetto. The Jew Chief of Police Gens uses the theater and a sewing factory to save as much lives as he can; in his ambiguous position, he kills Jews to save lives of others.

Vabalas’s thesis film “Footsteps in the Night” (1962) portrays Kaunas in 1943, occupied by the German army. Alex, who recently returned to the city, tries to join the anti-Nazi resistance, but is captured and imprisoned. He soon starts planning his escape. Even though the screenplay was forced on him by his superiors, Vabalas managed to avoid creating an overly-heroic film. Instead, his work is filled with tension and complex characters. The film involved one of the most memorable scenes in Lithuanian cinema, portraying prisoners dancing by the fire. (Kino Pavasaris)
