أخذت القصة من رواية خيالية للأطفال من نفس الاسم وتأليف الكاتبة "ديانا وايني جونز" بطلة القصة هي "صوفي" التي تعيش مع زوجة أبيها وبنتيها بعد وفاة أبيها ، الذي ترك لهم محل لبيع القبعات ، تحولت إلى امرأة عجوز من قبل ساحرة ولذلك خرجت للبحث عن "هاول" الساحر الذي أنقذها من قبل ليرجعها إلى شكلها الطبيعي ، والذي يمتلك قلعة مدهشة وغريبة والتي تبدو وكأنها رجل آلي عملاق وتتحرك بواسطة قوة شيطان النار "كالكفر" فماذا سيحدث بعد ذلك ؟ وهل ستتمكن "صوفي" من استرجاع شكلها السابق؟

عند احتجاز والدتهما بالمستشفى، أمضت الأختان الصغيرتان الصيف في الريف الياباني بصحبة والدهما.

كانت هنالك قرية صغيرة لا تكاد ترى يعيش فيها أشيتاكا بهدوء ونعيم. وهذه القبليه هي من القبائل التي قام الإمبراطور بنفيها وحكم عليها بنسيان إلى الأبد وبذلك تنفى هذه القبيلة وتختفي عن الأنظار وهكذا لم يعرف الناس بهم ولم يعرفوا قدرهم ومن قوانين هذه القبيلة أن أي شخص لا يمكنه مغادرتها والذي يغادرها لا يعود أبداً. أشيتاكا هو أميرهم وهو يقوم بحمايتهم جميعاً من المصاعب التي تواجههم في أحد الايام بينما كان أشيتاكا في الجوار مع غزاله الأحمر, صدر صوت غريب يشبه جلبه وفجأة يظهر حيوان غريب كبير وبذلك تتغير حياة أشيتاكا للأبد منذ تلك اللحظة.

ساحرة صغيرة تُدعى (كيكي)، تبلغ الىن ثلاثة عشر عامًا من العمر، ولا تزال قليلة الخبرة كثيرة العِند، لكن لها من الخيال والعزم والحيلة كثيرًا، مع قطها المتحدث (جيجي) دومًا بجانبها، نجدها على استعداد لمواجهة العالم بأسره أو على الأقل القرية الساحلية الاوروبية الطريفة التي انتقتها كموطنها الجديد.

يبحث عامل منجم شاب وفتاة غامضة عن جزيرة مفقودة منذ زمن طويل، يُشاع أنها تحتوي على ثروات كثيرة.

تدور قصة الفيلم حول فتاة بسيطة في الثانوية تدعى هارو ، حيث صدف في يوم من الأيام أثناء ذهابها للمدرسة أن صادفت قطًا كان على وشك الدهس من قبل شاحنة. فأنقذته. واكتشفت بعد ذلك أن ذلك القط هو ابن ملك مملكة القطط. حيث تدعى (بل تجبر) لاحقا لتأتي المملكة لتقديمها خطيبة لولي عهد الملك بأمر الملك المتسلط بعد أغرقت حديقة بيتها بهدايا من مملكة القطط المتمثلة في النعناع البري ومضارب التنس (حيث كانت رياضتها المفضلة). وخلالها بدأت هارو بسماع صوت همس أنثوي في أذنها بأن تذهب لمكتب القط حيث يوجد بارون . الذي سيساعدها في الخلاص من ورطة الزواج القسري الذي قرره الملك رغمًا عن هارو.

تدور أحداث القصة حول "بوركو روسو" أو الخنزير القرمزي، و هو طيار ماهر في فترة بداية صعود الفاشية في إيطاليا مسخ خنزيرا بعد أن عاد من الموت في الحرب. بين كبريائه كطيار و كرهه للقتل و الحرب و للفاشية و حبه المكبوت للمغنية جينا تدور أحداث الفيلم.

شيزوكو تسوكيشيما، فتاة في الرابعة عشر من عمرها، طالبة في مدرسة موكايهارا الثانوية، تعيش في طوكيو مع والديها أساكو وسيا، وأختها شيهو. شيزوكو دودة كتب وتهوى الكتابة أيضاً، تستعير الكتب دائماً من مكتبة مدرستها الثانوية، وفي أحد المرات لاحظت في بطاقة استعارة الكتاب اسم "سيجي أماساوا"، وقد تكرر هذا الاسم في كثير من الكتب التي استعارتها. وخلال الأيام التالية تتعرف على شاب من المدرسة يتضح لاحقا أنه هو سيجي. ، تتعرف شيزوكو على سيجي أكثر ويصبحان صديقين، وقد كانت بالصدفة قد تعرفت على جده الذي يملك محلاً للأثريات والساعات، تكتشف شيزوكو أن سيجي يهوى صناعة آلة الكمان، وهو جاد في هوايته لدرجة أنه سيسافر شهرين إلى إيطاليا لتعلم هذه الصناعة، وهنا تبدأ شيزوكو بمقارنة نفسها بسيجي، وتخوض مرحلة فكرية تحاول فيها أن تقرر مستقبلها، ولأنها مهتمة بالكتابة تقرر أن تبدأ بالتأليف، ولذلك جهزت نفسها واستعارت كثيرا من الكتب.

تدور أحداث القصة في مدينة كوتشي على الجزيرة اليابانية شيكوكو بين صديقين يقعا في حب فتاة منتقله حديثا من مدينة طوكيو.
