Młoda dziewczyna - Zoja (w filmie - Tania), ateistka, urządza (bezbożną) zabawę noworoczną. Oczekuje na przybycie swojego ukochanego Korę (w filmie Mikołaja). Gdy ten się nie zjawia zdejmuje ze ściany ikonę św. Mikołaja Cudotwórcy. Zaczyna z nią tańczyć. Znajomym to się nie podoba, ale Zoja deklaruje, że "jeśli Bóg jest, to niech mnie ukarze". Nagle zrywa się ogromny wicher, który wdziera się do domu imprezowiczów. Po jego ustaniu Zoja stoi cała blada, nieruchoma, tuląc do siebie ikonę. Nie można jej przesunąć ani podnieść - wydaje się skamieniała. Jedyną oznaką życia jest bicie serca i para wodna na lusterku przystawionym do ust. Całe miasto jest w trwodze. Jeden z dziennikarzy przybywa do miasteczka w celu zbadania tego fenomenu.
