Malmö, Zweden in 1942, tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Stig is een 15-jarige scholier op het randje van volwassenheid. Hij is verliefd op zijn lerares, de 37-jarige Viola. Hij valt voor haar schoonheid en volwassenheid, en zij valt voor zijn onschuldige en jeugdige gedrag, iets wat ze bij haar vervelende echtgenoot niet terugvindt die aan de drank is. Ze krijgen een gepassioneerde en verboden relatie, en ondertussen raakt Stig ook bevriend met de man van Viola. Maar de relatie tussen de twee geliefden heeft consequenties die beiden niet hadden verwacht.

Vier kleine gangsters uit Kopenhagen moeten een koffer met 4 miljoen Kronen afleveren. Ze besluiten echter met het geld ervandoor te gaan en naar Barcelona te vluchten. Onderweg naar Barcelona krijgen ze echter autopech en moeten ze zich voorlopig schuilhouden in een verlaten huisje.

Bess, een naïef, kinderlijk meisje dat gelooft dat ze in direct contact staat met God, is opgevoed in een streng religieus Schotse plattelandsgemeenschap aan het begin van de jaren '70. Wanneer zij verliefd wordt op Jan, een arbeider op een olieplatform en man van de wereld, trouwen zij tegen de wil van de dorpsgemeenschap toch met elkaar.

Het is 1964. De Oost-Europese Selma emigreert met haar zoon Gene naar Amerika. Ze werkt dag en nacht in de fabriek voor het bestaan van haar zoon. Selma ziet slecht en heeft een erfelijke ziekte waarbij ze uiteindelijk blind zal worden.

Stockholm in de jaren twintig. De jonge Roland woont samen met zijn socialistische vader, joodse moeder en een boksende broer. Zijn moeder verkoopt illegaal condooms, en van hen maakt Roland katapulten die hij verkoopt. Zijn opstandige gedrag heeft hem de speciale aandacht opgeleverd van zijn schoolleraar, die er altijd voor zorgt dat Roland wordt gestraft. Roland probeert ook extra geld te verdienen door fietsen te repareren, een succesvol bedrijf dat hem uiteindelijk in de problemen brengt.

De film bestaat uit een opeenvolging aan tableaus waarin vooral veel bleke mannen te zien zijn die de burn-out nabij lijken. Met een gedicht van César Vallejo ('Beloved the man who sits down') als rode draad, wisselen absurde en zwartgallige taferelen over een naargeestige tijdsgeest elkaar af.

Linus and Vanja begin to realize that they are living in a universe of their own. And there is neither room for the mom or boy- and girlfriends. They are drawn closer to each other and finally can't resist the taboo temptation in each others bodies. At first they deny, lie and try to resist. It's about shame and guilt and forbidden feelings which leads to a point where everything is at stake.

Per Olov Enquist's play about Selma Lagerlöf and Victor Sjöström after the shooting of The Phantom Carriage. Director Victor Sjöström has been shooting Selma Lagerlöf's novel The Phantom Carriage. He has invited the author to Stockholm to show her a number of scenes from the film in the presence of the talented cinematographer Julius Jaenzon and the young actress Tora Teje. The meeting between Lagerlöf, an older woman and world-famous author, and a young and talented actress becomes the focal point of the drama.

Little Pu spends a summer in Norrland with all his relatives. He and his brother get to hear the story about the watchmaker who hung himself, learns to shoot with a bow and follow his father on a bicycle trip.
